Elfie’s Return: Adventures of 2021

I am writing this on December 23rd, Elfie’s last evening with us. My children are at ages this year where they are incredibly excited about Christmas, and all of the activities and traditions. Their excitement makes the season truly magical. As excited as they are for Christmas morning, there’s one thing that’s making them hesitant to count down the days: the fact that Elfie will leave us after we go to sleep on December 24th.

We’ve had a wonderful month with Elfie! With everything going on in the world these days, she arrived masked, and kept her mask on for a few days. Over the past month we’ve discovered her climbing walls, reading with friends, hang gliding, and much more. Here are some of Elfie’s highlights from this year!

Elfie 2020: Her first week back

Elfie is back, and our children couldn’t be happier! The girls even lost sleep the night before Elfie arrived – see Elfie’s Return: Bringing Joy to the family (and maybe just a few tears!) for more on this!

Elfie’s Return: Bringing Joy to the family (and maybe just a few tears!)

Our eldest daughter started asking about Elfie’s arrival in early November. By mid-November, we had counted the days until Elfie’s arrival so many times that we decided to make a countdown calendar – for Elfie’s arrival and Christmas day!

Last night, the night of November 30th, our eldest was awake until 11:45pm. She could not stop thinking about Elfie’s return, and even came running out of her room once when she swore she heard Elfie on the roof, and later when thought she saw Elfie’s shadow move across the room!

Adventures of Elfie 2017

This is rather late … but better late than never I suppose! Right?! I apologize for a Christmas post in February, but I promise I have a good excuse for being so late. We welcomed our second baby in December … and things have been a little, well, busy!! I’m hoping that by publishing these ideas to my blog, perhaps they can help someone next year!

I know that there are mixed feelings about Elf on the Shelf … and I get it. Inviting Elfie (as our daughter named ours) into our house has certainly created a lot of extra work. There was more than one night where I woke up in a panic, having realized that I had forgotten all about Elfie! And now that we’ve signed on … there’s no end in sight! Even the arrival of our second baby in mid-December didn’t offer us a break. Although I must admit that Elfie’s creative poses/activities took a definite hit!!

Elfie 2016: Week 1

I know that not everyone loves Elf on the Shelf. Some think he/she is a bit creepy, and some just don’t have the time to be posing an elf every night before bed. Both concerns are incredibly valid, and have definitely crossed my mind! We have not taught our daughter any of the backstory about Elf on the Shelf – we just told her that Elfie has magic, and she often comes out to play while we are sleeping!

Every morning Baby E gets up and searches for Elfie. I hear her squeal when she finds Elfie, and she usually has a conversation with Elfie (for example, answering “Thank you Elfie!” to a note Elfie left telling her to have fun at The Nutcracker!) Despite the time it takes each night … I just cannot stop a tradition that brings such genuine happiness and amazement to my daughter’s life!
