Going off Gluten: Resources to help the transition with children

wheat-995055_1280

Last summer our family learned that we need to go off gluten. Our young daughter was diagnosed with Celiac, so no barley, rye, oats (unless marked gluten free), or wheat. And no cross-contamination. At first I felt quite overwhelmed. Preschoolers are not exactly known for adaptability and risk taking when it comes to food… so I was a bit worried! The fact that pasta is one of our daughter’s favourite “food groups” made me even more anxious about making the switch to gluten free.

I won’t lie … at first it was a bit tricky. She didn’t really understand why, all of a sudden, she could no longer eat many of her favourite snacks and meals. We tried out many different gluten free pastas, bread products and other snacks, trying to find alternatives that she would enjoy. Some of them were definite no’s – even I couldn’t bring myself to eat some of the pastas and macaronis that we tried! But over the past several months we have found some great options. Our daughter now asks me whether something is gluten free, and ok to eat, and she is no longer upset about avoiding some of her old favourites. Now that we have gone through the hard work of finding some yummy alternatives, I thought I’d share our findings in case anyone else finds themselves in this same position. Possibly save you from some rather unpleasant food testing! :)

Adventures of Elfie 2017

This is rather late … but better late than never I suppose! Right?! I apologize for a Christmas post in February, but I promise I have a good excuse for being so late. We welcomed our second baby in December … and things have been a little, well, busy!! I’m hoping that by publishing these ideas to my blog, perhaps they can help someone next year!

I know that there are mixed feelings about Elf on the Shelf … and I get it. Inviting Elfie (as our daughter named ours) into our house has certainly created a lot of extra work. There was more than one night where I woke up in a panic, having realized that I had forgotten all about Elfie! And now that we’ve signed on … there’s no end in sight! Even the arrival of our second baby in mid-December didn’t offer us a break. Although I must admit that Elfie’s creative poses/activities took a definite hit!!

Bonding through Board Games: 7 Recommended Games for Young Children

This post was originally published on Victoria Moms Blog.

We are definitely a “games family”. Growing up, my parents taught us numerous card games: everything from Uno, to Solitaire games, Accords, and Bridge. And our family has always loved to play board games. Every Christmas my Aunt would come to visit for a week, and almost every night after dinner the whole family would play board games. We still do! We have many favourites, including Pictionary, Cranium, What, Catch Phrase, and Taboo. I remember so many nights spent laughing together as a family, and so many jokes that started during a board game and went on for years.

Throwing a Fairy Party for your little girl

Our little girl turned 4 this year, and I wanted to do something special for her party. Something magical that she and her friends would be excited about, and maybe remember even after the party was over and the children had gone home.

I decided to plan a Fairy Birthday Party. First, my Mom and I created handmade invitations for my daughter’s friends. She had received another party invitation in the mail not long ago, and I saw the excitement she felt when she received a letter addressed to her. So I decided to go old school and make the invitations and mail them out.

With this recent sunshine and heat, it feels like summer is finally here. Summer is one of my favourite times of year (the other favourite is Christmas!) and it’s partly because of all of the events and festivities around town. My poor husband … I think he must spend a good chunk of time every morning accepting the iPhone calendar invites I send him, with all of the fun events that I want to check out as a family. But we love our weekend explorations!

Here are some of the festivals and events I’m hoping to check out with my family this summer. Hopefully you might enjoy some of them too! If I’ve missed a fun family-friendly event please let me know, and I’ll create a calendar invite for my husband ASAP! :)

This post was originally published on Victoria Moms Blog.

Beautiful pink blossoms are starting to pop up on trees all over town, and I’m pretty sure that was the sun we saw peeking out through the clouds today. Spring is in the air! As the weather gets warmer, one of my family’s favourite things to do on the weekend is explore local events and festivals. Spring is a great time for local events, and Victoria and the surrounding areas have a lot to offer!

Here are some of the family-friendly events and festivals that are coming up in the next few months. I can’t wait to head out to these events with my family, and hope that you might enjoy them with your family as well. Do you know of any festivals or events that I’ve missed? I’d love to hear them!
