Victoria Family-Friendly Summer Events & Festivals 2018


I can’t believe it’s almost the end of July. As always, summer seems to be flying by! I love all of the family-friendly events around town during the summer months. There is always so much to see and do; so many new things to experience as a family. I’ve pulled together a list of the festivals and activities that I’m looking forward to checking out in the next month or so, and thrown them all into our family calendar! I thought I would share for anyone else that might be interested. Lots of fun still to be had this summer!!


Moss Street Market
When: Saturdays, May – October 2018, 10am-2pm
Where: Corner of Moss Street & Fairfield Road in the Sir James Douglas school yard and boulevard
What: The market is always a fun place to wander around on a sunny Saturday! You can find various fresh fruits/veggies/crafts/art for sale, yummy lunch options, and even a kids tent with crafts and activities.

Sidney Street Market
When: Thursdays, June 7th – August 30th 2018, 5:30-8:30pm
Where: Beacon Avenue
What: The Thursday night market is one of my favourite summer activities! Beacon Avenue is lined with vendors for jewelry, clothing, fruits and veggies, baked goods, and so much more. There’s live music, and numerous delicious food vendors to choose from. A perfect evening outing!

Local Outdoor Movies
When: Various showings in July & August 2018
Where: Beacon Hill and Bullen Park
What: For older kids (or date night for parents!), try catching an outdoor movie at Beacon Hill! Six shows are being shown throughout the month of August, all starting at 9pm. Esquimalt is also offering a series of 4 outdoor movies at Bullen Park on every other Wednesday night in July and August.

Play in the Park with Panorama Recreation
When: Monday – Friday, July & August 2018, 5:30-8:30pm
Where: Various parks around the Peninsula
What: Every evening this summer (Monday – Friday), come and join Panorama Recreation at a different park around the peninsula! Bring the family for an evening of face painting, group games, the inflatable obstacle course, and more. Feature activities throughout the summer will also include Family Fitness, the portable skate park, story walks, and more.

Sidney Open Air Library
When: Tuesdays, August 7th, 14th, 21st 2018, 10am-12pm
Where: Iroquois Park
What: Saanich Peninsula Literacy and partners are bringing back the Open Air Library at Iroquois Park this summer! This event includes reading material and fun for all ages.  A free drop-in program that will not run in bad weather.

Music in the Park with Saanich Parks and Recreation
When: Tuesdays, July 3rd – August 21st 2018, 6-8pm
Where: Various parks around town
What: Pack a picnic dinner and head to a different park each week to enjoy live music, face painting for kids, and food for purchase!

Sidney Summer Sounds Concerts
When: Sundays, July 8th – August 26th 2018, 2-4pm
Where: Beacon Park (the bandstand at the foot of Beacon Avenue)
What: Take a blanket and umbrella, and enjoy a beautiful summer afternoon with live music and a front row view of the ocean! We have been to these concerts in the past, and always enjoyed them.

Peninsula Country Market
When: Saturdays, June 2nd – October 6th 2018, 9am-1pm
Where: Saanich Fairgrounds
What: Explore this Saturday morning market for local produce, meats, crafts, preserves, breads, treats, live music, and more.

CRD Summer Nature Outings
When: Various dates/times
Where: Various locations
What: The CRD offers numerous nature outings and hikes throughout the summer, and most events are free. The age range for each event varies; some events are drop-in and others require registration. Enjoy events such as Story Walk, The Beach Rocks, Seals! Seals!, Between the Tides, Bug Buddies, and more.

JULY 2018

Picnic in the Gardens
When: Wednesday July 25th 2018, 5-8pm
Where: The Gardens at HCP
What: Bring a picnic dinner, or order from Charlotte & The Quail. Enjoy your meal while listening to live music in the gardens.

Open House at the BC Aviation Museum
When: Saturday July 28 2018, 10am-4pm
Where: BC Aviation Museum, 1910 Norseman Road
What: Admission for this event is by donation, and includes Kids Pooh Corner and other activities, military re-enactors, food and refreshments, and more.


Butch Taylor BIG Truck Show
Saturday August 4th & Sunday August 5th 2018, 9am-4pm
Where: Heritage Acres
What: Check out the big trucks, and ride the trains from 10am-2:30pm. Admission and train rides by donation.

Victoria Symphony Splash
When: Sunday August 5th 2018, 1-10pm
Where: Victoria Inner Harbour
What: The Symphony Splash is held in the Inner Harbour, where the Victoria Symphony plays from a huge floating stage. There is a family zone on the lawns of the Empress Hotel from 1-4pm. The family zone will include face painting, an Instrument Petting Zoo, activity with the Royal BC Museum, games and activities with Sportball, bouncy castle, craft, and musical performances.

Victoria Dragonboat Festival
When: Friday-Sunday August 10th-12th 2018
Where: Wharf Street
What: The Dragonboat Festival includes the races, live bands, and much more.

Star Gaze at Fort Rodd Hill
When: Friday August 10th 2018, 8pm-midnight
Where: Fort Rodd Hill
What: Parks Canada Staff and experts from the Royal Astronomical Society lead this evening under the stars! The evening includes the opportunity to try out telescopes, participate in a night photography workshop, and more. If you wish, there’s even an option to tent overnight!

Cadboro Bay Festival
When: Sunday August 12th 2018, 11am-3pm
Where: Gyro Park
What: Held at Gyro Park, this festival will have everything from bouncy castles, to arts and crafts stations, food, and sand sculpting!

Water Gun Wars at Fort Rodd Hill
When: Saturday August 18th 2018, 12-4pm
Where: Fort Rodd Hill
What: Bring your own water gun for an epic water gun battle at the fort! Enjoy face painting, music, target practice, and other activities.

When: August 24th-26th & August 31st-September 3rd 2018
Where: In front of Commonwealth pool
What: Enjoy delicious Greek cuisine while watching live entertainment on the stage!

Salish Sea Lantern Festival
When: Saturday August 25th 2018, 7:30-9:30pm
Where: Beacon Park
What: This event includes live music, face painting, balloon twisting, and more. Bring your decorated lantern and join in the procession at 8:30pm.

100.3 The Q!’s Bed Races on Beacon
When: Sunday August 26th 2018, 1-3pm
Where: Beacon Avenue between 5th and 3rd Street
What: This event raises money for Sidney’s Peninsula Youth Clinic, as teams race hospital beds down the street! The event also includes a Family Fun Zone and food for purchase.

Saanich Fair

What: The Saanich Fair is a true fair with midway rides – but there is always so much else to see and do! Typically there are animals, performances, games, market with local businesses … and much more!
